Palatal Expanders

Upper Jaw Expansion Treatment

A palatal expander is one of the most effective orthodontic appliances for correcting a narrow upper jaw. At Bar Orthodontics in Rockwall, TX, Dr. Bar uses palatal expanders to widen the upper jaw, creating more space for teeth, improving bite alignment, and often enhancing breathing.

What Is a Palatal Expander?

A palatal expander is a custom-made appliance that fits against the roof of the mouth (palate). It applies gentle, consistent pressure to gradually widen the upper jaw by separating the two halves of the palate at the midline suture.

This process creates more space in the mouth and improves the overall relationship between the upper and lower jaws.

Why Upper Jaw Expansion Is Important

A narrow upper jaw can cause numerous problems:

  • Crossbite, where upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth
  • Severe crowding with insufficient room for permanent teeth
  • Breathing difficulties and chronic mouth breathing
  • Sleep-disordered breathing issues
  • Asymmetric jaw growth
  • Difficulty chewing and speaking

By expanding the upper jaw at the right time, we can address these issues and create a healthier foundation for your smile.

How Palatal Expanders Work

The expander is attached to the upper back teeth and spans across the palate. A small key is used to turn a screw in the center of the appliance, typically once or twice daily as prescribed by Dr. Bar.

Each turn widens the expander by a fraction of a millimeter. Over several weeks to months, this gradual expansion separates the palatal suture, stimulating new bone growth to fill the gap.

The result is a permanently wider upper jaw.

What to Expect During Treatment

Treatment duration varies but typically ranges from 3-6 months:

  • Initial adjustment period of 1-2 weeks as you adapt to the appliance
  • Active expansion phase with daily turns (usually 2-4 weeks)
  • Stabilization phase where the expander remains in place while new bone forms (3-6 months)
  • Some patients notice a temporary gap between front teeth—this is normal and closes naturally
  • Mild pressure or tingling sensation during active expansion is common

Benefits of Palatal Expansion

Patients who undergo palatal expansion often experience:

  • Improved bite alignment and jaw function
  • More space for crowded teeth to align properly
  • Better breathing through the nose
  • Reduced risk of impacted teeth
  • More attractive, broader smile
  • Foundation for successful braces or aligner treatment
  • Potential improvement in sleep quality

Is a Palatal Expander Right for You?

Palatal expanders are most effective in children and adolescents whose jaw sutures haven't fully fused, typically before age 14-16. For older teens and adults with a narrow palate, Dr. Bar may recommend a Maxillary Skeletal Expander (MSE) as an alternative.
