Craniofacial Orthodontics

Craniofacial Cases

Specialized Care for Complex Conditions

Patients born with craniofacial anomalies face unique orthodontic challenges that require specialized knowledge, experience, and compassion. At Bar Orthodontics in Rockwall, TX, Dr. Bar provides expert orthodontic care for patients with conditions such as cleft lip and palate, craniosynostosis, hemifacial microsomia, and other craniofacial differences.

Advanced Clinical Training in Craniofacial Orthodontics

After completing his orthodontic residency at UCLA, Dr. Bar pursued an additional year of Advanced Clinical Training focused exclusively on craniofacial anomalies—specialized training that the vast majority of orthodontists do not have.

This program provided intensive, hands-on experience treating the full spectrum of craniofacial conditions, working alongside surgical teams, and mastering the complex timing and coordination these cases require. For families seeking craniofacial orthodontic care in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, this level of specialized training offers peace of mind that few practices can match.

What Are Craniofacial Anomalies?

Craniofacial anomalies are congenital (present at birth) conditions that affect the development of the head and face. These conditions can impact the skull, jaws, teeth, palate, and surrounding structures.

While they vary widely in severity, many require coordinated treatment from multiple specialists throughout childhood and into adulthood. Orthodontic care is a critical component of comprehensive craniofacial treatment—and having an orthodontist with dedicated craniofacial training makes a meaningful difference in outcomes.

Conditions We Treat

Dr. Bar has extensive clinical experience treating patients with various craniofacial conditions, including:

  • Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate — The most common craniofacial birth defect, affecting the lip, palate, or both
  • Craniosynostosis — Premature fusion of skull bones affecting head and facial development
  • Hemifacial Microsomia — Underdevelopment of one side of the face
  • Pierre Robin Sequence — Small lower jaw, tongue displacement, and airway obstruction
  • Treacher Collins Syndrome — Underdevelopment of facial bones
  • Apert Syndrome — Abnormal skull and facial bone development
  • Other congenital and acquired craniofacial differences

The Role of Orthodontics in Craniofacial Care

Orthodontic treatment plays several important roles for craniofacial patients:

  • Preparing the jaws for surgical repair (such as bone grafting in cleft patients)
  • Aligning teeth before and after jaw surgery
  • Expanding narrow palates affected by cleft repair
  • Guiding jaw growth in growing children
  • Coordinating with prosthetic dental work
  • Achieving the best possible bite function and appearance
  • Managing dental development throughout childhood

Our Multidisciplinary Approach

Craniofacial care requires a team approach. Dr. Bar works closely with:

  • Oral and maxillofacial surgeons
  • Plastic surgeons
  • ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialists
  • Speech pathologists
  • Pediatric dentists
  • Prosthodontists
  • Geneticists
  • Other specialists as needed

Dr. Bar's Advanced Clinical Training means he speaks the language of the entire craniofacial team—understanding surgical protocols, optimal treatment timing, and how orthodontic decisions affect outcomes across all disciplines. This coordinated approach ensures that orthodontic treatment is timed appropriately with other interventions and that all aspects of care work together toward the best outcome.

What to Expect from Treatment

Treatment for craniofacial patients often differs from conventional orthodontics:

  • Treatment may begin earlier, sometimes in infancy with appliances like nasoalveolar molding (NAM) for cleft patients
  • Multiple phases of treatment may be needed as the child grows
  • Coordination with surgical procedures requires careful timing
  • Treatment duration may be longer due to complexity
  • Modified appliances may be needed for unusual anatomy
  • Goals focus on function (breathing, eating, speaking) as well as aesthetics
  • Retention and monitoring often continue long-term

Our Commitment to Compassionate Care

At Bar Orthodontics, we understand that craniofacial treatment involves more than teeth and jaws—it affects self-esteem, quality of life, and family dynamics.

We provide:

  • A warm, welcoming environment for all patients
  • Clear communication with patients and families
  • Coordination with your entire care team
  • Flexible scheduling to accommodate complex treatment needs
  • Sensitivity to the emotional aspects of craniofacial care
  • Celebration of every milestone in your journey
